Pre-release
A Slack alternative for communities and clubs
Slack is built for workplaces, and many communities and clubs use it anyway because it is familiar. Yappio is an unreleased chat app built for communities from the start. This page sets out the differences in plain terms and says where Slack is the better fit.
Yappio is in development and has not been released. Everything here describes what is planned. Last updated .

Yappio is in development and not available. The Yappio column is plans, not shipped features. Facts about Slack come from its public product pages and were last checked on 25 October 2026; please confirm anything important at the source.
Why communities outgrow workplace tools
A workplace chat tool assumes members are colleagues, online at similar times, with a shared purpose and an administrator. A community has volunteers, regulars who come and go and people in many time zones. Voice, events and a welcoming front page matter more, and message history limits matter differently.
What Yappio plans for communities
The design leans on features workplaces rarely need.
- Drop-in voice rooms that are always open.
- Voice notes with transcripts for people in different time zones.
- A server homepage with events and a gallery.
- A For you inbox so members can keep up without reading everything.
Where Slack is stronger
Slack has deep integrations with workplace software, structured workflows, enterprise administration and a track record at scale. If your group is a team doing work, Slack may well be the better tool and Yappio, which does not exist yet, is not a substitute.
When Slack is still the right call
If your group is mostly work, uses integrations with other business tools, and needs the administration and compliance features of a workplace product, Slack remains a strong fit. Yappio is not designed for that, and it makes no attempt to match it.
The case for something different is narrower: a club, a fan group, a hobby circle or a school society where the people are not colleagues, nobody is paid to be online, and the cost or the feel of a workplace tool gets in the way.
What a community notices
Communities tend to notice the small things first. How long does it take to find what was said last month? Can a newcomer tell where to start? Does the app expect people to be reachable at all times? Those are the areas Yappio is aimed at: search that includes voice, a homepage for newcomers, and quiet defaults.
Because Yappio is unreleased, none of this can be tested yet. Pricing is not decided, so there is no cost comparison on this page. If prices matter to you, check the current plans on Slack's own site.
Migration and history
Moving history between chat apps is hard, and no import tool is promised here. If you leave a community behind on Slack, expect to keep the old space as an archive and start fresh. That is a real cost, and it favours staying put unless the current setup is clearly hurting the group. If you are starting a new community, the question is simpler, because there is nothing to move.
Cost and ownership
Many communities start on a free workplace plan and discover limits on history or members later. Yappio has no pricing, so we cannot offer a comparison, and we will not hint at one. When prices exist they will be published on this site, and you should compare them with the current plans of any product you use, since those change.
Keeping it fair
We will update this table when facts change, keep the check date visible and remove claims we cannot support. We will not use another company's logo or speak badly of a product people rely on.
