Open Yappio

Pre-release

A calm group chat app for friends

Friend groups drift when keeping up feels like work. Yappio is designed for the kind of friendship that lives in small moments: a voice note on a walk, a room that is open when someone wants company, a reply waiting when you get back.

Yappio is in development and has not been released. Everything here describes what is planned. Last updated .

Voice notes without the homework

Friends often prefer to talk. The trouble with a voice note is that you can only act on it when you can listen. With a transcript attached, a friend can read it on the bus and play it later if they want the tone.

A room that is always there

A small server can hold a single drop-in room, which works like a shared living room:

  • Anyone can step in and say hello.
  • Nobody is rung or summoned.
  • Leaving needs no excuse.

Not missing what matters

The For you inbox lists replies and notes sent to you. In a lively group chat it means you can look away for a day and still know whether anyone asked you something.

Small groups are welcome

You do not need a community to use Yappio. A server of five people is a normal size. The homepage can be as simple as a pinned note and a list of upcoming plans.

Small is a good size

A friend group does not need roles, rules or a front page. It needs a place where talking is easy and nobody feels they owe a reply. The quiet defaults suit that: no badges demanding attention, a room that is simply open, and voice notes that can be read when listening is not possible.

Because messages that matter appear in For you, a friend can say something to you directly and be sure it will not be lost in a busy thread.

What it will not fix

A good app cannot make people reply or remember birthdays. What it can do is remove some of the friction that makes keeping in touch feel like a chore. If your group is already happy on another app, there is no urgency to move, and we would not suggest it.

When Yappio opens, the waitlist email is the only invitation you will get. You can join now, with nothing to confirm and nothing else sent, and you must be at least 13 years old to use the app.

Choosing how loud it should be

Friends differ in how much they want to hear from the app. Some like a message to buzz their phone, others like to look when they have time. The aim is that each person can pick, and that the quiet option is the starting point rather than something buried in settings. That means a group can include one friend who answers within minutes and another who answers at the weekend, without either feeling that the app is judging them.

Leaving without drama

Some people will want to leave a group or the app, and that should be easy and unremarkable. You should be able to mute a room, leave a group quietly and ask to remove your data without writing an explanation. A friendship is not a subscription, and an app that makes departure awkward has misunderstood what it is for. How account deletion will work is not decided, and will be published before the app opens.

When can friends try it

Yappio is still being built. If you want to bring your group along when it opens, join the waitlist, and share the link if you like. We will write once.
